With Friends Like Obama, Who Needs the Palestinians?

by: Kevin Swartzendruber

As if Israel has not been on the short end of the stick enough over the last century, President Obama has decided the tiny little nation should have to give away vast tracks of land in a bid to secure peace with the Palestinians. There are so many things wrong with what Obama advocated I hardly know where to begin. As if Americans needed yet another example of his total lack of adherence to principle or truth while running our nation, Obama again left us wondering what his definition of “Christian” is. I don’t personally know a true, Bible believing Christian who stands for legalized abortion, gay marriage, free handouts to the lazy, huge deficit spending, or the raping of the nation of Israel. Let’s not pull any punches here. That is exactly what this proposal was, a proposal to leave Israel raped and pillaged by all her enemies. To understand exactly how egregious President Obama’s proposal is we need to dive into a little Middle East history.

I could end this debate for all Bible believing Christians just by bringing up the fact that God Himself deeded the land of Palestine to Israel 3000 years ago in a pact made between Him and Abraham. In that covenant, God handed the land of Palestine to Abraham and His descendants.

The LORD said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, "Lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward, for all the land that you see I will give to you and to your offspring forever. Genesis 13:14-15

Later, when Abraham had taken things into his own hands, God clarified the deal by stating that only the child of his wife, Sarah, was legal heir of the land.

And Abraham said to God, "Oh that Ishmael might live before you!" God said, "No, but Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his offspring after him. As for Ishmael, I have heard you; behold, I have blessed him and will make him fruitful and multiply him greatly. He shall father twelve princes, and I will make him into a great nation. But I will establish my covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this time next year." Genesis 17:18-21

Since that time the two have been at odds. In fact, God declared that Ishmael would be a “wild donkey of a man, his hand against everyone and everyone's hand against him, and he shall dwell over against all his kinsmen.” (Genesis 16:20) What a perfect description of what the world has had to face at the hands of his decedents, the Arabs! They have troubled America, Europe, Russia and many other places. The only reason the world has even tolerated Arab/Muslim fanaticism is because of their control of the world’s vast oil resources. Everywhere but in America, Israel is the odd nation out. If it were not for the heavy Christian influence in our country, we no doubt would have double crossed the tiny nation as others have. How any president that calls himself a Christian could propose a peace plan in total violation of the express will of God is beyond me. Makes one wonder if Obama is more true to the culture that originated his name than many are willing to admit. So far he has only demonstrated an anti-Christian agenda in every area.

Although Israel’s title deed from God goes back 3000 years, Yahweh warned her that if her people did not obey Him, He would drive them from their land into all the nations of the world. Yet He made it clear that one day He would establish her again among the nations.

“For on my holy mountain, the mountain height of Israel, declares the Lord GOD, there all the house of Israel, all of them, shall serve me in the land. There I will accept them, and there I will require your contributions and the choicest of your gifts, with all your sacred offerings. As a pleasing aroma I will accept you, when I bring you out from the peoples and gather you out of the countries where you have been scattered. And I will manifest my holiness among you in the sight of the nations. And you shall know that I am the LORD, when I bring you into the land of Israel, the country that I swore to give to your fathers. And there you shall remember your ways and all your deeds with which you have defiled yourselves, and you shall loathe yourselves for all the evils that you have committed.” (Ezekiel 20:40-43)

Although Israel did not remain faithful and was sent packing, true to His word, God began to gather her back to Palestine toward the end of the last century. The movement was reinforced legally by the League of Nations in 1920. Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after World War I, The League of Nations legitimized the establishment of a Jewish homeland with the Palestinian Mandate. Most of the nations of the Middle East that we see today, including Syria, Iraq, Jordon, Saudi Arabia, etc. were formed at this same time. The thriving Jewish communities that were established in the 1880s continued to explode in growth as increasing numbers of Jews returned to their homeland. The original tract of land granted to the Jews in the Mandate included Gaza, the West Bank, the Golan Heights, as well as much of the nation of Jordan. Arab nations, in an attempt to thwart these plans, encouraged mass migration of their Arab populations into the area.

In the time leading up to Israeli statehood, the UN recommended partitioning the remaining Palestinian Mandate between Arabs and Jews. Although the deal would have left them with only 13% of the original Mandate, and 60% of that the arid Negev Desert, Jewish leaders accepted. Instead of accepting a deal to create a Palestinian state for Arabs, however, Arab leaders elected to go to war in an effort to grab the remaining land.

Following the 1948 war, Jordon annexed the West Bank, while Egypt occupied Gaza. These new, informal borders left Israel only nine miles wide in the middle and totally vulnerable to attack, yet the Jews left well enough alone, wanting only peace.

In 1967, Israel’s neighbors again mobilized for a full-scale invasion and blocked Israel’s water ways. Seeing the handwriting on the wall, Israel moved preemptively in a defensive war. Upon capturing the Golan Heights, the Sinai Peninsula, Gaza, and the West Bank, Israel immediately offered to swap land for peace. Her offer was swiftly rejected by an Arab world unwilling to recognize her as a nation. Again, in 1973, Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack upon Israel and were swiftly defeated.

Hoping to foster peace, Israel relinquished the Sinai Peninsula in 1979 to Egypt and signed a peace treaty with Jordon in 1994. By the time Arafat began the violent Second Intifada in 2000, 98% of Palestinians lived under an autonomous Palestinian government. Seeing no hope for progress, Israel withdrew unilaterally from Lebanon in 2000 and from Gaza and parts of the West Bank in 2005. In spite of all these efforts, Israel has been continually attacked by Palestinians from Gaza and the West Bank and by Hezbollah from Lebanon.

Israel’s neighbors have repeatedly stolen land from the Jewish people, and left their Arab populations in Palestine as an obvious ploy to leave a thorn in Israel’s side. Far from wanting peace, they have plotted toward their ultimate intention all along, the total annihilation of Israel, using the Palestinians to do their dirty work. Meanwhile, the world has stood by barely lifting a finger to help.

Negotiations with Israel’s neighbors are a farce and should be recognized as such.  Compromise will never bring peace in the Middle East. America must stand on the side of truth and stop catering to thugs and criminals. She should develop her own energy resources and break free of Arab extortion. She should oust public officials who hold compromise over truth and tyranny over freedom. Ultimately she should revisit the principles that made her great and hold them fast until the true Prince of Peace comes to take His kingdom. As for Israel, with friends like Obama, she might do well to stop placing her hope in this world’s leaders and start looking up.
